Chapter 1: An Overview of Podcasting in the U.S in 2020

Americans who listen to podcasts use the medium to stay in touch with the latest news, and 51% say they find podcasts relaxing. According to a recent survey of more than 1,000 adults in the U.S, podcasting is a fun way to listen.

In 2020, more than 100 million Americans listened to at least one podcast every month, and there are currently more podcasts available for download on iTunes and Spotify than in January 2020. Together with the growing number of listeners, this means that there will be over 1.5 million new podcasts on the podcast market by 2022. In 2021, people will listen to more than 2.3 million podcasts per month on Spotify and iTunes, a 3.4% increase from February 2019 and a 7.1% increase from January 2019.

Nine out of ten podcast listeners in the US say they listen to podcasts at home, and more than half of those who have ever listened to a podcast has heard it at least once in their lives, more than six months ago. Another podcast study shows that 30% of people listen to podcasting on Apple's podcast service, and more than half (52%) of the entire U.S. population listens to the Apple podcast service.

Chapter 2: It is continuing to grow in the U.S rapidly!

In 2019 and 2020, the percentage of Americans who listen to podcasts each month rose by 5%, from 32% to 37%. Older populations have become more integrated than younger ones, with increases of 3.5% from 2019 to 2020 and 4% in 2021.

The total number of podcasts on Spotify increased by 1.5 million between 2019 and 2021, suggesting 1.2 million new podcasts were launched during the Anchor period. To tell you that you are not alone, we have seen a 3.2% increase in podcasting over the past year, and design-oriented podcasts have risen by 3.404%. There are currently more than 2.3 million podcasts available for download on iTunes and Spotify.

About 37% of Americans listen to podcasts, with the most passionate listeners consuming 11 or more podcasts per week. More than half (52%) of podcast listeners in the U.S say they listen to at least one podcast per week, up from 49% in January 2019.
